Why coffee tastes muddy
07 Jun 2026
Ever have a cup of coffee from your favorite coffeehouse and think "this coffee tastes muddy or, "this coffee had a heavy mouthfeel". There a re some reasons behind for that.
- Too fine a grind for the brewing method: This allows fine sediment to finds it's way into your cup
- Too much coffee in the brew: More is not always better. Many coffeehouses use 2 tablespoons per 6 oz. of water. For some that is too much. I know a few people who prefer using 1/2 tablespoon per cup. They find the that amount produces a clean cup. Personaly, I prefer 1 tablespoon. I get a good cup that is clean and flavorfull.
- Poor filtering: Same result as using the wrong grind for the brewing method. Sediment in the cup.
- Old Coffee: Yep, coffee gets old. And fairly quickly too. Coffee should be consumed within 3 weeks of being roasted. Older coffee will still provide coffee flavor but will be flatter, less bright and could also give a muddy mouthfeel.
