Which Coffee Grind Should I Use?
Fine Grind: This type of grind is used in pressurized brewing methods such as Expresso, Moka Pot and AeroPress systems. Hot water contacts the coffee for a very short time so fine grind is used to allow for perfect extraction.
Medium Grind: Ideal for Drip Coffee Makers and Pour Over, hot water is in contact with the coffee for a few minutes thus allowing for perfect extraction.
Course Grind: Immersion brewing methods such as French Press, Cold Brew, and Cowboy Coffee involve steeping coffee in water (hot or cold) for an extended period. Course grind is used to prevent over extraction.
French Press: Coffee steeps for around 4 minutes. Course ground is used so when the coffee grounds are pressed, minimal coffee ground sediment is left in the coffee.
Cold Brew: Coffee Steeps for 12-24 hours depending on taste and body preference. Bob's Roasted Coffee recommends steeping for no longer than 14 hours to produce a delicious cold brew without the bitterness longer steeping time brings.
Cowboy Coffee: In a pot of boiling water (8 oz. water for each cup), add one scoop (2 tablespoons) of coffee. Allow to simmer for a few minutes, stirring to help extraction. Remove from heat. Add a couple of tablespoons of cold water to settle the coffee grounds (back in the old west, eggshells were used to settle the grounds). Use a ladle or carefully pour your cup of Cowboy Coffee.
